*The Myth of Aquarius*

The gods lived happy lives, feasting in marble palaces on Mount Olympus. Their food was called ambrosia - a delicious cake which allowed them to live forever. Because eating ambrosia made people immortal, the gods kept it for themselves. Only a few mortals were allowed to taste it - and when they did, and became immortal as well, they would leave to live with the gods on Mount Olympus.

One of these mortals was a shepherd boy named Ganymede, and he was the gods' favorite - one of the gentlest & most beautiful mortals they had ever seen. One evening he was playing with his dog, Argos, in a field beside a quiet stream. Soon it became sunset - time to drive the sheep home for the night. But as Ganymede lifted his shepherd's pipe to call the sheep, there was a sudden sudden whirr of wings, a dark shadow loomed overhead, and a gigantic eagle flew down and perched beside the flock.

Ganymede cried out for his dog Argos to attack, but instead of chasing off the eagle, Argos crouched and bowed in front of it. Ganymede was astonished -- even more so when the eagle spoke, identifying itself as Aquila, eagle of Zeus. Aquila told Ganymede he would be taken to Olympus, to spend his days as the immortal cup-bearer of the Gods. But Ganymede was concerned about the flock & his family. So Aquila the Eagle plucked a feather from its wing, and Ganymede tucked the feather into Argos' collar. Ganymede said good-bye to his furry friend, and as Argos led the sheep home, Ganymede took off on the eagle's back for his flight to Olympus.

Ganymede was loved by all the gods for his gentleness and compassion -- he even saved humanity. There had been a great drought for many decades, and the humans were angry & dying. Ganymede pleaded with Zeus to let him collect water from the sky to give to the humans. Zeus, moved by Ganymede's passion, finally allowed him to interfere. Ganymede collected water from all the Heaves, and poured it from his pitcher upon the humans, creating the first rain. Plants once again grew, and people and animals rejoiced at the new life. From that point on, Ganymede was known as Aquarius, God of the Rain, and was immortalized in the stars so all humanity could remember his deeds.
