One of my most favorite places to visit on the Big Island is Puako Petroglyphs park. It's a truly magical place full of symbolism and images that portray past life, beliefs, and stories. The ancient Hawaiians called their petroglyph art k'i’i pohaku which translates to images on stone. There are over 3000 carvings portraying pieces of ancient Hawaiian life as paddlers, runners, fighters, dancers, and family groups as well as endemic animals such as turtles, birds, crabs and deity symbols. The paddle dancers has to be one of my favorite symbols of Hawaiian culture.

The image was deep etched (sandblasted) on the face of this blue aqua terra jasper stone and filled with metallic blue paint fill. This pendant is 30x40mm (1.18x1.57 in) in diameter. The bail is sterling silver (0.925).
