Men's fashion has become somewhat boring, you'll pardon my saying so. But it wasn't always. A good example is the ever-popular swallowtail coat. A functional and yet swaggering, rakish garment if there ever was one, for both gentlemen and scoundrel.

This style of coat-dress was called a joseph or riding coat (borrowed in French as redingote), usually of unadorned or simply trimmed woolen fabric, with full-length, tight sleeves and a broad collar with lapels or revers. The redingote was later worn as an overcoat with the light-weight chemise dress.

Napoleon I’s Coat of Arms contained the eagle and bee, emblems of the First and later Second Empire. Used as a symbol of immortality and resurrection, the bee was chosen so as to link the new dynasty to the very origins of France. We have constructed the coat so the raw silk bee fabric adorns the lapels, collar and cuffs.

Sage and Champagne Floral Tapestry cloth
