A delightful Ox Roasting carving set, presented in 1928 by the village of Mapplewell & Staincross to The Right Honourable Sir William Sutherland KCB (Knight Commander) PC.

Sir William Sutherland (1880 - 1949) was a Scottish politician of the Liberal Party and close associate of the Prime Minister David Lloyd George, serving as his private, press and Parliamentary Private Secretary.

He was also a colliery owner, owning several coal mining enterprises, hence the tie-in with Mappewell & Staincross, which is near Barnsley, Yorkshire, in the North of England, formerly a prolific mining area.

The handles of all three items are made of ox bone and the blades were manufactured by Thomas Turner & Co., of Sheffield, England, Cutlers to His Majesty King George V.

They were made of Hygenic stainless steel and were part of the Encore range. The fork has a Cunningham guard.

The presentation box measures 15 3/4 inches by 5 3/8 inches. The carving knife measures 13 5/8 inches long, the steel is 11 7/8 inches and the fork 9 3/4 inches.

The condition of all items is good; the steel has some oxidization to the hilt and the box has damage to the back where one hinge has detached and the wood has damage.

The blades have some scratches from use.

Overall though, this is a high quality set, as you would expect to be presented to a knight of the British Empire and it is in fine fettle for the age.

It would be a super addition to any collection, excellent display or practical piece, or authentic period prop.
