This lovely book has no date in it, but from doing some research on it I believe it is either from the late 1800's or early 1900's. The title is Adventures of a Brownie and the only name given for the author is Mulock. The cover says this is the Pastel Edition and it is published by H.M. Caldwell Co. The cover has a lovely picture of a young woman writing in the upper right corner. The binding color is pink and the gold accents are made to look like metal pieces. The cover does have a white area where paper has some off and it also has wear on all the edges plus the ends of the spine.

An inscription is written inside the front cover with a pen. The title page has an Art Nouveau design. The book has 6 black and white illustrations. Six adventures are included in the book - Brownie and the Cook, Brownie and the Cherry Tree, Brownie in the Farmyard, Brownie's Ride, Brownie on Ice and Brownie and the Clothes.

The book describes Brownie as "a curious creatures - a fairy, and yet not one of that sort of fairies who fly about on gossamer wings, and dance in the moonlight, and so on. He never dances; and as to wings, what use would they be to him in a coal celler? He is a sober, stay-at-home, household elf - nothing much to look at, even if you did see him, which you are not likely to do - only a little old man, about a foot high, all dressed in brown, with a brown face and hands, a brown peaked cap, just he color of a brown mouse." The children are the only ones who can see him ,of course.

Do you believe in little people, fairies, elves? If you do then you will love this little book.
