Very good condition. Some light cover spotting; slight rubbing on board tips; paper slightly age-toned; a few scattered small spots in text, no tears. Previous owner's inscription in very light pen facing title page: "Christmas 1894." No other marks. Contents clean and complete; binding tight and secure.

In "A Study in Scarlet," Conan Doyle introduces his characters Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson for the first time. (It is also said that the magnifying glass makes its first appearance in fiction as a detecting tool in this novel.) First published in England in 1888 and in the United States in 1890, this is a rare (only several copies listed as library holdings on WorldCat) Early American reprint and a sweet, collectible volume.
