Pond Life Serving Platter in Browns and Blues

Way back in the 16th century, a Frenchman named Bernard Palissy began creating what he called "rustic ceramics," plates and platters that capture the vibrant life of a pond or lake. Montana artist Kate Bertin spotted one of his platters on a recent visit to the Louvre, and became determined to develop the idea into her own style. This piece is the very first of the series, "Pond Life," and is signed by the artist. It is microwave safe, although we suggest hand washing to preserve sculptural elements.

The platter is created from a slab of clay pressed into a platter mold. Kate then added molded lizards, starfish and frogs. After the platter dried, she used a combination of underglazes and glazes to add vibrant color to the piece.
