This is "Nola".
Nola is a dedication to a city where part of my soul lives, New Orleans.
This 100% handmade, one of a kind winged skull is built on a sturdy wire armature, and then sculpted and carved in layers of paper mache pulp. I painted this skulls wings in a finish of terra cotta which reminds me of the beautifully aged stucco walls and haunting architecture in the french quarter. The dotted details on these wings are like tiny strings of lights and beads that hover over doorways and drape along railings or around the necks of Nola's visitors. I paid special attention to the teeth and carved in lots of authentic looking detail. This skull has an intricately painted old world Fleur de Lis adorning its crown. I wanted to evoke the warmth, color, shadow and flavor of this historic city by paying homage to its african roots without going "full voodoo".

This skull is very strong and durable and sealed in varnish. It is one of a kind. There were no molds used in this process. There is a wire built into the back for an easy display. It's made to last lifetimes and created for indoor decorative use only.
Measurements are 18" wide x 10" tall x 2" thick.
