A common view of the middle ages is one of localized economies, with little or no import or export between regions, much less land masses, but international trade thrived throughout the middle ages. Many merchants traveled by sea, as water provided the fastest way to transport large quantities of goods. Many towns held annual fairs, which attracted merchants from distant lands and often included dancing, food, entertainment, and games. Merchants was a valuable part of medieval societies and economies and eventually helped give rise to the middle class of skilled craftsmen and traders in the central middle ages.

I lovingly crafted this journal of rustic nutmeg brown leather and it closes with a flap which closes around a filigreed metal button (the design on the button hearkening to Eastern European styles, as if acquired on a merchant's many travels). The back side of the cover has a few marks, but it did come from an animal, after all. It almost looks like it is already well loved, yet still looks brand new. The pages were hand-torn and bound into the cover in one signature, using blue waxed Irish linen thread. The journal will lay flat with some use, so you can write or draw all the way into the margins.

I can easily imagine a medieval merchant using a journal much like this one, perhaps filling its pages with sketches, trading routes, or notes. Likewise, this journal is perfect for anyone who loves a beautiful and unique book to fill with stories of their own adventures.
