This very large exquisite hat from the early 1910s is a picture perfect example of the Gainsbourough Hat, called so because of the huge romantic hats worn by the model painted by that artist. This picture hat is made of blonde woven horsehair with a very wide black silk ribbon and black ostrich feather. Lining is also in excellent shape and the very wide underbrim is backed with black velvet. Super wide in both the crown and brim, the very top of the crown needs to be stitched to the netting under it, although I wore this hat without making that repair and it behaved itself ;-) The brim is 18 inches across!
