island barn whale bench

Roughsawn old growth slab bench salvaged from an island barn in the north Puget Sound. With mid century modern hairpin legs.
Whale bench because something of the sea has taken root.

Douglas fir plank planed smooth to interior while preserving the deepened tone of years doing work in the elements, absorbing rain and salt air with brief intermissions of sun. Traces of the sawmill blade and patina totally intact, only lightly cleaned, on edges and underside.

Wood is finished with a locally-produced tung oil and beeswax. Steel hairpin legs preserved with clear matte enamel.

Bench is 9.5 to 11.5 inches wide x 2 inches thick. Overall bench height 18 inches. Bench is made to order and will be near equivalent in color, texture, patina and tone as shown in photos.

At 3 ft long, with overall 18" height, bench is $230
4 ft long, with overall 18" height, bench is $245
At 5 ft long, with overall 18" height, bench is $260

Wood varies with each piece. But there is a commonality of tone and figure and patina.

All birdloft reclaimed materials are sustainably harvested in a big-hearted, biodiesel-breathing compact pickup truck. For biodiesel purists, please note, the biodiesel is 100 percent recycled. This is just one aspect of birdloft's efforts to be awesome. More trumpeting can be had at

birdloft prides itself on its exceptional craft and clarity of design. Every piece is made with meticulous attention to detail and knowledge of how wood moves and breathes. You may find a less expensive piece in a similar style, but it won't be built to the same level of perfection.
