Fold forming is a technique developed by master goldsmith Charles Lewton-Brain. It is a wonderful new way of forming sheet metal quickly into a 3-D shape and textured design. "Developed between 1980 and present, it is a conceptual approach to metalsmithing that emphasizes forming using the metals characteristics." (Charles Lewton-Brain)

Here, I have used a wire to form fold the curve. The metal is formed around the wire creating the curve. These earrings are made to be worn to frame the face. They do not match which gives them a unique look. The pattern was created using a Roll Print technique. The metal is put through a rolling mill with the desired texture, leaving the design imprinted on the silver. Keumboo has also been added. Keumboo is an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver. The 24 carat gold foil is applied with heat and pressure to produce a permanent diffusion bond.

The silver has been patinated. Patina is the result of oxidation of the metal and can create darkened areas in the details of the silver. This gives the lovely gun metal color on the outside of the earring in the imprinted design
.
Please notice that the pattern on the left earring continues to the right earring. This is intentional.

The sterling silver that is used in most of Barbara's work is Argentium. Argentium is the finest silver with superior brightness, purity, durability, tarnish resistance. Instead of using nickel or copper, Argentium is made of the metalloid germanium. It still retains the 92.5% silver content and is referred to as sterling silver. The properties of this kind of sterling work extremely well with the fold forming technique.

Measurements: one earring approx 55mm in length, approx 14 mm in width. The other is approx 55mm, approx 10 mm in width.
