INSPIRATION & MEANING ::
The inspiration for the Chamsa Series comes from the multi-dimensional aspects of the letters in the Hebrew alphabet. They are literal, numerical, symbolic and spiritual in nature. In the Hebrew alphabet the “Aleph” holds the value of one. As such, it is a tangible symbol of G-d as the Creator and Master of the Universe or “Adon Olam” (אדון עולם). In recognition of the prime position “aleph” holds, it is said that the Creator attached “crowns” to its points. The “Bet” holds the value of two and represents the concept of duality. It begins the word “blessing” or “brachah”, and literally means house. The essence of the letter and the phrase “baruch habah”(ברוך הבא) imbues this art with words of welcome and prayers for blessings over your own home. The “Gimel” holds the value of three and represents the concept of kindness. It is said that the Torah, Divine Service and Acts of Kindness are the guiding principles of our lives. All of these are contained in the first three letters of the hebrew alphabet. “Gimilat Chesed” (גמילות חסד) or Selfless Acts becomes a reminder for us to help others which ultimately elevates us to heavenly levels. And the final coaster is inspired by the first words of the Old Testament book of Genesis “In the Beginning” or in Hebrew, “B’rayshis” (בראשית). The dual-colored background is a reflection of the dramatic moment when G-d separated light from the darkness, birthing our universe and the cosmos. “And G-d said, let there be light, and there was light...And G-d divided the light from the darkness.” The center motif is filled with the raw brown clay that was eventually molded and formed by our Creator to produce the first human, Adam. The heart of this piece is the planet Earth, our Earth, with the small hand of a child rising above it. Within the innocent palm is a simple daisy symbolizing our human existence in its purest state. The Chamsa (hand) has been used for centuries as a symbol of luck, protection against evil and is known in Jewish lore as the “Hand of Miriam”. The Chamsa also represents G-d's protective hand.
