"There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed." - Ernest Hemingway

This is a beautiful example of the very popular Olympia SM-3. Every key presses smoothly and overall, the typewriter is very clean considering it is over 50 years old. It could use a bit of additional cleaning and a new ribbon, but this machine would stand up to heavy use or could obviously still be just a great decorative piece.

Olympia SM-3 typewriters come in various colors. This typewriter happens to be a fairly unique two-tone burgundy over grey. The colors work well together and the chrome badge, return lever, and other embellishments really make this typewriter an eye-catcher.

Although it is painted gray and looks a bit metallic, the case is actually wooden. It does have a crack in the right front corner (see photo) and a few scuffs and scratches. The latch closes securely but sometimes takes a few tries to do so.

The history of Olympia typewriters begins in 1903, when European company AEG started to develop a typewriter to capitalize on growing demand. The first typewriter with the name "Olympia" was manufactured by AEG in 1921. Based in Germany, the company survived World War 2 and began to grow in popularity in the late 1940s after a bit of restructuring. By 1961, almost half the typewriters in use in Germany were Olympia portables. You can find a much more detailed history of the company here:
