"The Art of Painting" by Leonardo da Vinci. Copyright 1957 by Philosophical Library, Inc. Learn painting techniques (with a bit of scientific approach) from one of the world's true masters. This edition of da Vinci's Treatise of Painting includes a table of daVinci's original 365 chapters, with reference to the corresponding chapters in the original Italian.

From the introduction:

da Vinci "gave momentum to the art of painting, through his mastery of anatomy and aerial perspective, through the perfect blending of realistic detail with psychological penetration...Of his vast writings on a variety of subjects only one work was acclaimed by the generations immediately following his own, and was distributed through printing: his Trattato della Pittura [Treatise of Painting]...Leonardo was about forty when he conceived the plan of embodying his ideas on art in a book; he labored on it until the end of his life, without ever giving to this work anything even faintly resembling a final form..." The Treatise of Painting was translated into numerous languages since the volume of 1651, and in 1802 da Vinci's original 365 'chapters' were further organized..."

This book is in very good condition. Light foxing (tiny brown age spots) are evident on the page ages when the book is closed, but otherwise the book is nice and clean. The upper corner was crimped at bit on a few pages. Light rubbing to the corners of the cover. Measures 7 1/2" x 4 3/4" and has 224 pages.

This book was found alongside many other mid-century art books and exhibit guides that I will be listing from Chattanooga artist George Cress's estate. A modernist, Mr. Cress was one of the most well-respected and renowned artists in the Southeastern U.S., particularly in the mid-20th century. Cress was a prolific painter who traveled extensively, which he believed helped develop his craft.
