Why Raw Baltic amber ?

I prefer working with this so called Raw Baltic Amber since it is less processed compared to gloss polished stones. Only sand like abrasion is involved to get rid of sharp edges and/or cracks. Otherwise the beads stay almost as intact (drilled through as they are) as found on the Baltic beaches when handpicked by amber 'fishermen' throughout the ages and up to the present day. I have to admit, though, that most of my amber is not found in that way any longer but is mined, in nearby Kaliningrad region, except for some larger and unique stones that are displayed separately. Raw amber is warmer to the touch just as beachfront catches because of larger ultimate surface area of raw amber. Although it is not finely gloss polished to shine and reflect objects it is still silky and warm to the touch and would not feel scratchy or prickly as one might imagine from its 'rough' namesake.

What exactly is Baltic Amber ?

Baltic amber is fossil resin produced by pine trees which grew in Northern Europe about 50 million years ago. The resin was washed out of the forest floor by large rivers and transported south towards the sea. In the course of time the resin was transformed to amber due to processes of polymerisation and oxidation.

Colours of Baltic amber:

Usually Baltic amber is yellow or bright yellowish. The colours of amber range from white, yellow, brown to red. There is greenish, bluish, gray and even black amber. Even more subtle shades and combinations are among them. Amber can be absolutely transparent or absolutely opaque. Amber is not always one-coloured: the unique combinations of two or more colours and shades, patterns (sometimes they form the most brilliant compositions of art) can be found. For these reasons amber becomes attractive, charming and unique.
