Ambrotype in case, Civil War Era, glass photographic plate. A small portrait of a bearded man in in a gutta percha case with a latch. This measures just 2 1/2 inches by 2 7/8 inches when closed. It is just holding together - that is, it is bound together solely by the fabric which crosses from one side to another, which is quite frayed. The image on the glass plate is quite ghostly, the bearded man is very faint presence. The frame is probably gold-washed. Loss of cover at top and bottom as shown in the last photo. The cover contains the usual floral cut velvet design on the inside.
