This is a gorgeous rare cherry red beach gem found on the shores of Monterey Bay, California. What makes this a fascinating piece is that there are two layers; red over clear. It is approximately 5/8" long, 3/8" at its widest, and 1/8" thick. Beautifully frosted, rounded edges, with a couple of nicks. These do not detract from this rare piece of sea glass. A perfect piece for a pendant. or to add to one's sea glass garden.

History:

Monterey Peninsula beaches have an interesting and colorful history, from pirate pillages in the 1800’s (one beach was named “the Beach of Insurgents”) to the fishing, whaling, and canning industry in the 1900’s, to marine biological research in the mid-1900’s. It was Monterey where Spanish ships brought Franciscan Friar Junipero Serra to the area to establish one of the first Californian pueblos in June, 1770, and later, Monterey was the original location of the state capital. Nobel Prize winner, John Steinbeck, used the location and lives of those he knew in Monterey, to write Cannery Row, Tortilla Flat, and Sweet Thursday. He referred to Monterey Peninsula as “the circle of enchantment.”
