Vintage J. Chein Moon Globe

This is a Moon Globe made by the J. Chein Company in the 1960s. It is a tin lunar globe on white plastic stand. J. Chein & Co. was an American toy and housewares company that produced a number of educational globes, globe coin banks and novelty globes

The globe is screen printed with photographic images of the moon’s surface and divided by a raised black and white striped equatorial band into the side facing the earth and the “dark” side not visible from earth (rendered in a lighter shade of blue). The black and white stripes each represent 10 degrees of latitude. The earth side is a composite of photographs taken from the U.S. orbiter Copernicus. The other side of the moon is based on photographs taken by astronaut William Anders aboard Apollo 8 (December 1968), and is incomplete. A comprehensive picture of the dark side was not yet available. The globe does list some of the landing sites as shown in picture #4.

Craters and other geological features are labeled in green and the impact and landing sites of spacecraft are labeled in orange.

The globe sits loosely in a white plastic stand, supported by three curved uprights, on tapered stem and round base. When in the base the globe sits approximately 12" high.

The condition of the globe is very good. There is no loss of map, nor of color, but there aretwo dents one in each hemisphere. Neither of which impact the look of this great collectible. The plastic portion of the base is in excellent condition, with no fading or wear!

In any case this is a great bit of history that you don't want to pass up!!!!

As always, ENJOY!!!
