This pin is bronze, made with BronzClay, from a mold I made out of a real oak leaf I picked off the ground last fall. I searched for a long time to find the perfect leaf. Because it was made from a mold, the veins in the leaf are raised.

The leaf was given a patina with liver of sulphur which came out mottled browns with a hint of orange, much like the actual leaf. I have given it several coats of jewelers' lacquer to protect the patina.

The pin has a base metal pin back.

The leaf is quite large, 3 inches (75mm) across and 2 inches (50mm) tall.

About Metal Clay: PMC (Precious Metal Clay) is a medium in which fine silver particles are suspended in an organic binder. It can be worked much like any other clay. Once it has been dried, it is fired at a high heat. The binder is burned away and the silver particles fuse to each other, so the final product is a piece of fine silver, or .999 silver. For more information on PMC, you can visit the PMC page of my website: http://willowandme.com/PMC.html

Copper clay and bronze clay are both very similar to silver clay, with the resulting metal being (stating the obvious...) copper or bronze. The firing requirements for copper and bronze are quite different than silver, however. They must be fired considerably longer. Since copper and bronze easily oxidizes/tarnish and many people have reactions to copper, all pieces I make with copper and bronze have been coated with a wax or lacquer to prevent oxidation and skin reactions. Bronze is a metal alloy containing 90% copper.
