Natural Wood Bullroarer *English Elm* for Love!

This bullroarer is fashioned from a "plank" I sawed from a branch of a small dying Elm tree that had to be removed from my hedge. I never cut wood especially for crafting, but always make use of what has to be removed for reasons of tree health, vehicular or pedestrian access or habitat management. Sadly, these majestic trees are no longer a common feature of our countryside due to the predations of Dutch Elm Disease, so you rarely see anything made from the wood any more. The extensive spreading roots constantly send up suckers, so we always have several small Elm trees in the hedge ranging from mere twigs a couple of feet tall to ones up to about 10 or 12 feet. They only live 15 to 20 years before they're beaten by the beetle, so they don't get the chance to grow much bigger than that. Most years we have to cut down at least one and it's sad to think that none of them get the chance to grow up. Bullroarers are whirled round on the end of a length of cord and as they twist through the air they create a sound quite unlike anything else; an atmospheric hum that seems to resonate with the very bones of Mother Earth and can be varied with the speed of the swing as well as the length of the cord. In magic, they are used to call the spirits of the ancestors or local guardians, or to keep away any malevolent entities. Although most commonly associated with straightforward communication and the Australian aboriginal people, artifacts like this have been found connected to many primitive cultures throughout the world and are increasingly being used by modern witches and pagans of all kinds to create or sanctify their sacred space.

This particular bullroarer is quite small and light, convenient for indoor ritual and very easy to take with you anywhere. The wood shows some really beautiful colours and patterns in the grain, and in places it has a wonderful iridescent sheen. Elm has quite a coarse texture so if you slide your fingertips along the surface you can feel the grain, which makes it remarkably tactile. It would be perfect to attract the spirit of love into your life, or to ensure that your sacred space is full of loving energy.

This bullroarer comes with about four feet of waxed cotton cord, attached with a knot that won't twist loose (especially important if you want to avoid the hazard of high-speed flying missiles inside your home or the hassle of trying to find it in surrounding undergrowth!) I use waxed cotton cord because unlike most other types of cord or string it is braided, not twisted. Twisted cord will unravel over time from the constant twisting of the wooden blade in the air, which has a weakening effect on the cord as well as looking unsightly. However, even this type of braided cord will wear out eventually and no knot is infallible, so please check it at regular intervals and replace it if neccessary.

As usual, all the work was done the traditional way by hand, with no help from power tools of any kind. Both the cord and the oiled finish are completely free of animal products and there are no metal parts.

I can make bullroarers from any wood I have that's suitable, either larger or smaller than this one, a slightly different shape, or with runes or other symbols burnt into the wood. I can also add a bead or toggle handle to the end of the cord to ensure it doesn't cut into your fingers during particularly energetic swinging and make it easier to hang on to. Just drop me a convo if you'd like one custom made to your own specifications, the only criterion for bullroarers is that the piece of wood be fairly thin and longer than it is wide.

Elm can be used in any magic to do with love, whether romantic or any other kind.

Size: About seven and five eighths inches long, an inch and a half wide and less than a quarter of an inch thick.
194mm x 39mm x 5mm.

It will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture and care instructions.

Please exercise common sense whilst using this bullroarer... if you bash it against people it will hurt, and if you bash it against things like walls, ceilings, furniture or trees then something's likely to get damaged. It's not a toy, but a serious tool for your magical practices, and is not designed to be used by children or idiots. :-)
