Marked down from $39. Handcrafted white stoneware (Danish porcelain) serving plate made on the potter's wheel. Thrown and altered plate, high fired to 2350 degrees f. in a soda kiln. Plate is flashed in the soda vapors to a toasty, almost copper to a soft yellow color and decorated around the rims with trailed green and red slip decoration is over a swirl of white slip. We use our soda plates to serve cookies and appetizers and sandwiches, and in-between, as center pieces on our dinning room table.

These altered plates are fun to make, and I think they will look good on the dinner table. The soda surfaces are getting to be exactly what I am hunting for, and I look forward to making many more.

Soda firing is a dramatic process similar to salt glazing, but minus the harmful pollutants. Soda firing uses sodium bicarbonate and/or soda ash introduced into the kiln at peak temperature. The soda swirls unpredictably in the kiln, changing the glazes in wonderful and often surprising ways.

NOTE: the bottoms of soda fired pots are lifted on wads of clay to protect them from sticking to the kiln shelves. These wads leave white marks on the feet of pots. Additionally, soda may bubble up from the shelf further scarring the bottom. All marks are carefully scraped down and sanded smooth to protect your furniture.
