Okay.... maybe this is stretching the concept of a 'wooden spoon' just a tad.... but it does consist of a 'bowl' and handle. So, take away any expectation of utility and this qualifies.

'Out on a Limb' is so named on account that this burl was growing out on a limb of a pine tree on my brother's mountain top land in VA. The thicker branch was actually growing up through the center of this burl and being 'end grain' it was a bit difficult to hollow the bowl. Which led to a couple of interesting moments. In addition, the wood was still 'wet' and filled with sap, so the work had to stop every minute or two to clean the rotary burrs, which gummed up horribly.

All said and done, I like the sculptural quality of the piece. I have always admired Mother Nature's way of creating these unexpectedly odd-looking growths. This one is left intact on the exterior which contrasts well with the polished wood.

The spoon measures about 10.5" long with the burl being 3" wide.
