This unique brass table lighter carries no manufacturer branding or patent information; its removable firing insert and spherical base are both simply marked "Made In Japan" (see photo #5). My best guess is this piece was made in the 1950s, as a high-quality (perhaps un-authorized) reproduction of the quite valuable Karl Wieden (KW) ball table lighters first produced in Germany during the 1930s. This piece uses a semi-automatic firing mechanism very similar to those employed by KW. I love the look of this lighter style. The pivoting arms attached to the snuffer remind me of drive gears on a steam locomotive. This lighter features a dual fuel chamber system. The removable firing mechanism has a smaller primary fuel reservoir. The cotton-filled base serves as a huge secondary fuel chamber (see photo #4). Though there are still traces of the original chromium plating visible on the firing insert, it's worn away completely from weighted, spherical base. The brass warmth of this piece is quite unique.

This table lighter works very well and will be shipped with a flint and without fluid. (Please do not store this lighter with the flint though, as it will deteriorate and become impacted over time.) I've full disassembled and cleaned the firing mechanism, installed a new NOS wick, repacked the upper fuel chamber, and tested this piece to ensure it is in reliable working condition. I've also hand polished its brass exterior. There is a noticeable dent on one side of the base (see photo #3) and smattering of other minor pings. Despite its flaws, this rare lighter is quite beautiful and a truly hard-to-find piece. I've provided high quality photos to offer the best preview of its condition. The round, mirror-like brass finish was pretty tricky to photograph; I think it looks much nicer in person than my photos show. Please take a look and feel free to ask any questions.
