Vertical Cities is back as a second edition – even more obsessively detailed linework than before! Architecture, whimsical utopias, signage, typography, the microscopic – when it comes to illustration, these are some of my loves. Drawing Vertical Cities was a labor of said love!

After a year's worth of sketching, I landed on this imaginary city reconfigured from the standard horizontal plane to a vertical one. Reimagining municipal services like public transportation on a vertical plane (e.g. local & express elevators in lieu of subways) was a really fun thing to plan out, in addition to trying to determine which places of business to include where. It also gave me plenty of great excuses to walk around Chicago neighborhoods that summer soaking in various doorknob shapes and balcony configurations!

The original was fully completed in pencil and ink, and prepared digitally for letterpress after another year of work. It's jam-packed with detail and hopefully provides, you the viewer, with new discoveries every time you look at it.

As much fun as it was to illustrate the city itself, I like thinking about what's outside and around it. What is to the left and right of the city? What exists underneath it? Are the residents likely happy? Where is the funeral parlor and jail? I have answers to all of these and they are in the next series of drawings!

TECHNICAL
Vertical Cities is a limited edition of 300, letterpressed on 110 lb. cover (300gsm) Lettra letterpress paper from Crane's, in Fluorescent White. Each print is signed and numbered. It is unframed, and the paper dimensions are 11"x25", with a 1/2-inch inside white border.

Being that it is an unconventional size, if you are looking to frame it, it would need a custom framing job from your local frame or arts & crafts shop. Please feel free to message me for suggestions in that department.
