~Fabulous French Christening Gown with Hand Embroidery and Valenciennes Lace

Today we are presenting another exquisite Christening gown....this one too is French

This magnificent French gown likely dates from the late 1890s to the early 1900s. This gown was certainly made for a fine French family of 'wealth and taste' as this gown is richly elegant and refined. It has been entirely handmade... but its glory is the hand worked embroidery that covers the deep ruffled 'collar' and the very full skirt...both back and front! Hundreds of tiny French flowers have been embroidered on this lightest of cotton batiste fabric making this gown lavish but also so very sweet. This exceptionally fine gown would have been commissioned for the baptism of a baby girl from a high ranking or even 'noble' family.

The deep ruffle that forms the bodice covers full sleeves which are equally exquisite even though they don't show. Both the 'collar' and the sleeves are edged in Valenciennes lace and this finishes the ruffle at the bottom of the skirt. There one also finds tiny hand sewn pin tucks and an amazing border of 3 rows of undulating drawn thread work. This lovely gown closes at the back with three tiny mother-of-pearl buttons. It is this kind of attention to detail that makes this exceptional gown truly extraordinary.

To my mind this heavenly French antique Christening gown looks like something Marie-Antoinette might have worn ...rather frou-frou ...maybe a bit , but really this is the epitome of French elegance and 'savoir faire.' And if a precious baby girl can't wear all the ruffles and frills she wants on her first Big Day out, than who can?

Again I want to repeat that this gown has been entirely handsewn using the finest materials...this kind of needlework is rare indeed these days, but this is an stunning example of the finest work from long ago. Also I'd like to add that gowns like this don't grow on trees. We must hunt dilligently , and we find a gown of comparable quality perhaps 5 or 6 times a year...and when we do we generally must pay a premium for them...but we determined when we began our business to try to present the highest quality possible....this gown is an example of that. We know that it a costly thing...but it also a Rare thing of great beauty and workmanship.

I would like to suggest that this gown should have a petticoat made to wear under it. This is a simple matter for any good seamstress and will support and protect the gown, make it opaque when worn, and give it 'body.' This will also help to show the magnificent embroidery to best advantage. Perhaps this would be a 'labour of love' for a grandmother to undertake.

This gown measures a generous 20 inches around at the raised waist. Very importantly the arm opening measure 9 inches around so that the baby inside the gown is comfortable and can move her arms freely without pinching, or tearing the gown. This gown measures 36 inches from the shoulder to the hem and a wonderfully full 78 inches around at the hem. Because we cannot assign sizes to these vintage items, please check your measurements carefully. We can say that we believe this gown would fit a baby of up to about 12 months and likely a few months beyond according to body type.

Finally this gown is in superbe condition, clean and white with no stains, holes, or repairs which is also exceptional for a gown this age. This gown has evidently been carefully stored and cared for.
This lovely and truly unusual French Christening gown will come to you freshly hand laundered using fine French hypoallergenic soap and will be ironed, fresh, clean, white, and ready to use.

All in all this is an exceptionally fine and elegant French Christening gown, a magnificent creation for the baptism of a lovely, and much loved, baby and it will be treasured for generations to come as a fine family heirloom.
