A natural solid 1.47-carat Opal from Ethiopia, measuring 13 x 6 x 3 mm and cut as a marquise shaped cabochon. This gem has a milky soft peach base color with an amazing play of color. This effect ranges from predominantly green and blue flashes when the stone is held against a light background, or to a more pronounced rainbow effect when the stone is held against a dark background. There are no cracks, crazing or pits on this piece, and it has a superb polish.

Recommended setting for this lovely gem would be as a pendant, tie pin or brooch, either with a bright metal like platinum or gold, or a darker metal like oxidized silver or oxidized copper. If being set as a ring, protection would need to be given to the stone to prevent it from coming in contact with other objects.

Opal has a hardness of 5.5 - 6.5 on the Mohs scale, so care should be taken when setting and wearing this delicate stone. Since Opals contain water, they should not allowed to freeze or dry out; they should be protected from high heat and shocks, as well as chemicals like oils, perfumes, and household cleaners. Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaning.

The pictures give an idea of how the gemstone looks under various lighting conditions and against variously colored backgrounds. The last picture show the play of color on the back of the gem.

Opal is the wedding anniversary gemstone for the 18th year of marriage and is the birthstone for the month of October.
