RESERVED Exclusively for Carol - Vintage Taxco 925 Sterling Silver Earrings Modernist Seashell Design Signed TC-60 MEXICO 925

These vintage Taxco Sterling silver earrings feature unique oblong repoussé stylized seashells with flat backs soldered on to create closed hollow forms. Silver posts for attachment to pierced ears are placed slightly off-center on the backs (closer to the top than the bottom), indicating that there is a right and a left earring to this pair (see photos). The earrings are on the heavy side: they each weigh about 0.26 ounce Troy (8 grams), for a total of a little over one-half ounce of Sterling. They may some getting used to if you plan to wear them; if you have more than one ear piercing in each ear, it seems like they may be easier to wear/look better a little higher up on the ear. As they have no stone setting, they could be altered relatively easily to suit you by a good silversmith. Alternatively, repurposing by combining into a single piece would create a striking necklace centerpiece or perhaps a brooch, or two pendants could be made.

One of the earrings has three marks stamped on the back: “925” (silver content of Sterling is 925/1000), “TC-60” (registry/maker’s mark), and “MEXICO”. This type of registry mark for silversmiths was used in Mexico after around 1979-1980: the T signifies Taxco origin, the C denotes one of the maker’s initials (in this case the paternal surname Cabrera), and the number is the registry number associated with Taxco silversmith Francisco Cabrera Barrera. If not repurposed, these would make a good addition to a collection of Mexican silver. The earrings are in good vintage condition. The light use wear, consisting of overall tiny scratches and dents visible under magnification, is consistent with vintage silver. Best estimate of the age of the pair is that they were made in the mid-1980s.
