A very striking piece of sculpture by an artist with limited materials and much skill, this remarkable copper basket or pierced box is 10" long, 7" wide, and 7" high. Running all around it are several rows of animals, there are elephants, horses and creatures that look something like a squirrel and something like a cat, they may be leopards, which are native to India. This piece is quite old, it is brass on copper. The maker had only thin sheets of copper to work with, which by hammering and folding he made into a basket with handle, rim and lid. Some of the brass has worn off the copper, so the tarnished metal has a color range of brass yellow to copper red. The top knob is dented in slightly on one side (you can see the indentation in the second photo). The holes hammered through the copper are unfinished on the inside - that is, the metal sticks out around the holes.. This is a very unusual piece of folk art sculpture and I have priced it accordingly.
