The penny coin was the third smallest denomination of the Irish pound: there were 12 pennies in a shilling, 20 shillings in a pound and 240 pennies in a pound.

The penny was designed by the English artist Percy Metcalf. The coin was 1.2 inches (30.9 mm) in diameter and weighed 9.45 grams.

Ireland became a free state in 1922 and in 1926 moved to form a monetary system and coinage committee. The committee agreed to utilizing the sterling monetary system instead of establishing their own national currency.

REVERSE: A hen and her chicks (important symbols of Ireland’s agricultural economy).
