Forged in fire with the hammer and anvil.

This highly decorative and useful fire poker would also fit well in the "wall art" or "sculpture" sections.

First, let's talk about the dragon's head, it started out as 1/2" solid square stock steel and came to life on the anvil under the hammer blows at a yellow/orange heat. Details were then added using hand held punches that I made (eye punch, nostril punch, etc...).

The head is followed by a hot punched hole to hang on the custom hook. Hot punched holes are so much cooler than drilled ones. As you can see, the metal expands on each sides keeping it's strenght instead of being drilled out.

Next in line are 2 copper rivets to determine the handle's limit, my logo punch mark, and a decorative traditional twist.

For the poker end, smooth curves were made so the wood logs can be poked, pushed or pulled.

For the wings, I drew them and had them laser cut , braught them to an orange heat in the forge and hammered them all around to give them texture and match the hand forged dragon.

The hook is made of 3/8" round stock that has been hammered flat, split and formed in the shape of fire flames. The section where the poker rests is kept round.

The hook was then attached to the wings with a hammered rivet.

There are no welds on either of these items and they have been hand hammered all over to give that warm hand made touch .

For cleaning, I use the wire brush followed by a light sand paper. This highlights the hammer marks. I heat everything up again and brush on a traditional blacksmith anti-corrosion treatment for inside ironwork applied at a low heat.(This treatment contains beeswax and boiled linseed oil).I really like this finish as it leaves the bare metal to be seen with it's highlights and gives an excellent protection for inside ironwork.

Lenght of poker is 32".

Height of winged hook is 10 1/4"
Width of winged hook is 12".

Included are 4 decorative wood screws that match the ironwork.

This listing is for the dragon poker and winged hook you see in the photos above.
