Bear Hug? What else to call a vintage hand blown float that looks like it's wearing a bear rug?! Humor abounds....in a fishing float that's not only so beautiful but has comedic appeal. Though it may be 'blasphemy' (among net enthusiasts) to make such a suggestion, the big hairy net may be left as found, or removed to reveal the glossy, rich luster of this high quality antique glass. And beautiful it is! Showing normal, or less than normal surface wear, in a brilliant teal blue turquoise, the lovely glass is highly reflective and shows tiny, champagne type bubbles when held directly to the light.

The float measures 4" diameter (the glass on its own) or 13-1/8" in circumference (with or including the width of the net). The net is a thick, heavier 'rope' netting, rather than a 'twine' type of net. It is fully intact and in good condition. I recommend handling with the care that should be given to a vintage net - such as not soaking and drying repeatedly in water, not subjecting it to bright, hot, drying sunlight and handle it with care to avoid loosing tiny fibers that may fall off. Original, authentic natural fiber nets that remain intact are increasingly difficult to come by. This net is hemp or possibly manilla rope.

The seal button is basically round in shape and the glass nice and even. It has been well placed. The surround edges are refined and nicely smoothed. After decades of service at sea, the surround edge shows one spot of shallow chip or grazing to the edge. The grazed spot is not sharp to the touch of a finger tip, indicating it has been there for a long time and become eroded much like sea glass. The spot is covered by the net in the photos, however I noticed later the net can be moved. Most times one would not attempt to move a net as they're generally tight and it's best not to stretch the rope or stress it in any way. The seal is quite pretty, very reflective with a lovely 'pearl' opposite the 'eye' (center) like an internal, turquoise bubble of glass. 'Bear Hug' is ready to give its new home a big hug!

Thank you for helping to care for vintage fishing floats which are rapidly being replaced with plastic or synthetic floats.
