This is a scarce original old Coca Cola bottle, embossed on the side, Pat. DEC. 25th, 1923, and thus referred to by collectors as a " CHRISTMAS " or " XMAS " Coke bottle. These originals are hard to find, and can be identified by the large, bold, base embossing, and are made with very thick, heavy, glass.

There are 1000's of reproductions of these bottles that you see in all of the antique shops, on eBay, etc. and they all have small printing on the base, are very light in weight, are just too perfect; and are everywhere. It is rare to find the originals, like this one. And again, the earmark of the originals is the very large lettered base embossing, as seen in the last picture.

This bottle is embossed on the sides "Coca - Cola TRADE MARK REGISTERED BOTTLE PAT'D DEC. 25, 1923 ", and is embossed on the heel, "CHATT 34".

Bottle is embossed on the base in LARGE lettering, "MEMPHIS / TENN."

This bottle is in good condition. It has case wear mainly around mid section (seen in the pics), a few scratches, scrapes, nicks, nothing too bad or worth mentioning.

The town and state that is embossed on the base of these bottles is what makes them so collectible. Collectors try to get one from every state, every town, small out of the way towns, hometowns, and so on. Not a lot of these old originals are still out there, most have been absorbed into collections.

Did Coca Cola originally have COCAINE in it?

John Pemberton, an Atlanta Georgia pharmacist was the inventor of Coca-Cola. As a chemist in the 1880's, he developed a product that he registered as French Wine Coca--Ideal Nerve and Tonic Stimulant. Though this tonic was developed strictly as a patent medicine, in 1886 he added another ingredient and turned it into a soft-drink. Pemberton named his new soft-drink "Coca-Cola".

An ad placed in the 1880's, by John Pemberton, stated that the original Coca Cola syrup / extract was added to soda water and the drink was said to be, and I quote,

"An intellectual beverage and temperance drink that contains the valuable tonic and nerve stimulant properties of the Coca plant and Cola nuts, and makes not only a delicious, exhilarating, refreshing and invigorating beverage (dispensed from the soda water fountain or in other carbonated beverages) but also a valuable Brain Tonic, and cure all for nervous affections-sick head-ache, neuralgia, hysteria, melancholy ... J. S. Pemberton Chemist, Sole Proprietor, Atlanta Ga."
