Safe Camp hobo sign cross stitch, completed in 3" faux woodgrain flexihoop

---The Story---

If you are a frequent traveler or you know one, you know how comforting it is to come back to a warm meal, a clean bed, and familiar surroundings.

During the Great Depression, traveling workers rode the rails looking for work. Because they weren't familiar with the areas they stopped in, they developed a symbolic language among themselves that would help them communicate quickly whether the communities they were approaching would be hospitable or hostile toward them and what they could expect from the homes and people there. The system of symbols included commentary on whether there were barking dogs, police nearby, a likely mark, or a kind woman who would offer dinner if she heard a pitiful story.

(They were basically the "favorite" and "like" buttons of the past, combined with the often-wished-for "dislike" and "this person is crazy" buttons Facebook just won't add despite my emails.)

Now you can join the conversation as a modern-day traveler and host. Display this small sign for "safe camp" and show your guests that you're welcoming them in for a meal -- or whatever they need -- in historical, poignant-but-simple style. It's a hip welcome sign and a conversation piece. (Pictured with "bread" in second photo and with "bread" and "good for a handout" in the fourth all in flexi frames.)

---The Deets---

This classic symbol will be stitched on oatmeal aida cloth and framed in a 2.5" round "woodgrain" flexi frame to mimic the fenceposts the sign would have been carved or drawn on in an earlier time (default), a natural wood embroidery hoop (as in the first photo) or a secondhand frame from my collection.

*CUSTOMIZE: Other hobo signs are coming, as is a larger-sized sampler. Feel free also to convo me with suggestions for modern day or traditional traveler signs you'd like to see in the shop or on your wall or countertop. I love custom orders.

If you'd like 3 or more, check out specialized listings in my shop fpr a small discount. See "The Links" below for listings.

*FRAME: Hobo signs will be framed in a 2.5" round "woodgrain" flexi frame unless you select a natural wood hoop or secondhand frame in the drop-down menu at checkout or request otherwise in the purchase order notes or via convo ("contact seller").

*SHIP: These receive ALMOST-free shipping with another item within the U.S. and will be sent USPS first class with delivery confirmation or international first class within a week of your order, and almost always sooner, unless I convo you otherwise or a delay is noted in my shop policies, banner or announcements (below the banner).

*GIFT WRAP: If you'd like to have this gift-wrapped, please convo me or include it in the purchase order note, and I will wrap the stitch in plain paper with a notecard for you to put your "to" and "from" on -- or tell me who it's going to, and I can write it in on your behalf -- as pictured in the final photo.
