All these prints from this 1960 lot of bookplates are now on sale in SeaSeaRider. I have single, pairs and double prints, as this one is, and some trios. The backgrounds on many of these is a work of art in and of itself. Check them out for a pair or grouping but they are large enough to stand alone as art if you choose!
This is a beautiful double print from a book from the 60s. This is a double page measuring 21" by 10 5/8". It is nice heavier weight matte finish paper. This is a stunning detailed photograph of shells. I especially love the background on this print. In most of the bookplates I have in this lot the backgrounds are works of art in and of themselves. Wonderful condition to be 45+ years old.
Background is variations of wave shadings of charcoal gray while the shells incorporate shades of white, gray, charcoal black, and black.
One side has a rough edge where it was attached to a book. On the middle of one long side the edge has a page number in black. Both could be covered easily with a mat or frame but I like the number as it adds to the sort of cabinet of curiosities look.
The fold is in the center of the page, see 4th photo. Honestly, when it is opened it hardly shows because of the detail on the shell . You could frame it as a big piece or separate into a pair. On this particular listing if you did that, part of the darkest shell would be cut off and be on the other page. You could still work with it by matting to coverand you would have to adjust the other page by covering some of the background so they would be the same size. If you left the page number showing, that would not deter either as many cabinet of curiosities type prints often have page numbers and writing on them. The last photo shows another print from a pair I have listed in SeaSeaRider and is not included in this listing.
Check out my shop SeaSeaRider for many vintage shell prints, quite a few black and white and some color. Some of the color ones I have are hand-tipped, meaning they are attached to the page. My photography doesn't do justice to these. The backgrounds on the colored as well as the blk white are often filled with shading , bubbles that look like tiny water droplets, or reflections of the shells. Exquisite photography!
