The Far Hills Race Meeting traces its origins to the Essex Hunt, a fox hunting event founded in Montclair, NJ in 1870. In 1890, Charles Pfizer, son of the co-founder of Pfizer pharmaceuticals, bought Montclair’s Essex Hunt Club and relocated it to George Seney’s estate in Bernardsville. In 1913, the organizers of the Essex Hunt incorporated as the Essex Fox Hounds.

The Far Hills Race Meeting attracts over 40,000 loyal fans and swells the township to the 2nd largest in Somerset County. Families, socialites, college students, and horse racing fans return year after year to watch the world’s finest steeplechase horses vie for a $1 million purse. 2021 celebrates the 100th running of the event.
