Matchbook Landscape: I first got started on Matchbook Landscapes with a small collection of old matchbooks my then 90 year old grandfather-in-law Pete had in a plastic baggie in the back of his junk drawer. I salvaged his matchbooks when he was downsizing from the home he lived in for over sixty years, where he and his wife raised their family.

Matchbook Landscape: For each matchbook I locate where the business would be in Google Maps and on the inside cover of the matchbook I make sketch in pencil what is now at this location. I include the "Streetview" that I draw from in the fourth picture in the listing - the "streetview" is a bit different than the one I drew from in 2012, but I forgot to take a screen grab back then and internet browser updates have changed the streetview. Each drawing now takes me about four or five hours of time to complete (as I have gotten better at these small drawings, the time has gotten longer and longer). Sometimes the places advertised on the matchbooks are still in business even after decades have passed, some businesses have changed names and are under new ownership, and some buildings are empty or have been torn down and replaced by new buildings or even empty lots. This series has become a meditation on change. The age of the matchbooks I use vary, but all are a unique view and a tangible memento of the past and how quickly all places change. Even the history of matchbooks has evolved and what was once a common item to give out to promote a business has now become rarer to find except in antique stores or our own junk drawers.
