One of my fondest childhood memories is of gathering leaves on our little Girl Scout walks, which we would later iron into waxed paper to preserve them. So I decided to make a pendant honoring my favorite leaf to collect back then, the sassafras. Sassafras leaves are my favorite because they have such interesting shapes, beautiful Autumn colors, and I remember how much I loved the way they tasted when I chewed on their stems!

My Sassafras Leaf pendant is made with cotton batik fabric in muted rust and green tones, which I appliqued onto olive green wool felt with terracotta cotton floss. The back of the leaf is made of the same batik fabric, which I reinforced with heavyweight fusible interfacing.
I embellished the leaf with embroidered veins in olive green floss and tiny glass seed bead "dew drops".

The pendant is sewn onto a cord that I crocheted from Elsebeth Lavold Hempathy yarn, a blend of hemp, cotton, and modal, in an olive green tweed with a wonderful soft, rustic texture. The cord measures 36" and easily ties around the neck at the length you prefer. The pendant measures approximately 4" in length and 3" in width.

The Sassafras Leaf brooch was handmade by me from my original design in a smoke-free and pet-free environment. The wonderful 100% wool felt that i used in this project comes from
