Butterfly Woman #1

This mixed-media piece was created on a large canvas using acrylics, clay paint, with several stitched, hand pounded bark paper butterflies.

Dimensions - 52"L x 43" W

The butterflies you see here are the final stage of a long process; gathering, peeling, cooking, weaving, pounding, drying, and painting.

This mixed media piece was born from a traditional, indigenous process that was passed on to me of Hand Pounded Bark Paper, Amate, Amatl. The inner bark of mulberry, birch, or fig trees and other wild plants, such as tule reeds, are gathered and peeled and then cooked with fire ash to break down the fibers. At this point they are woven together and then hand pounded with a flat lava rock and left to dry in the sun. After they are dried a thick sheet of paper is made.

I've taken this process a few steps further by designing and creating the Pounded Bark paper into various fine art paintings and basket concepts. Often adding to them natural dyes, clay paint, acrylic paint, stitching them with sinew, and sometimes using branches and hand patined copper.
