Arctic Dream, I ~ contemporary abstract landscape by artist Dawn Chandler
It's interesting the unexpected turns one's Muse can make.
This painting began as a sunset — though not intentionally so. But that was what was starting to emerge. The light and mountain forms reminded me of winter sunsets over Albuquerque, when I have driven down there on the shortest days of winter.
But then something magical happened.
As I was working my Muse whispered "Turn the painting 180-degrees" — and suddenly an entirely different landscape — an entirely different and enchanting painting — revealed itself to me.
Suddenly there was a distant snow covered mountain, glowing in late afternoon sunlight....
Suddenly a glassy surface of lake stretched between the mountain and me....
There in the corner, the full moon reflected in ice, as a warm halo of last light rimmed the far mountain’s silhouette....
And I realized I'd painted a prayer for a far away place that's haunted my dreams: our Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

This painting is painted on heavy watercolor paper that's been mounted to a sturdy panel; the edges/sides of the panel are painted a flat grey, rendering a frame unnecessary/optional.
This is an original, one-of-a-kind painting by Dawn Chandler.
