Letter Press on Antique Atlas Page
Approximately 11” x 14”

Last winter I bought an antique sign press (letter press) at an antique store. I found a stack of antique atlases the very next day at an estate sale. I heard “You Can Go Your Own Way” on the radio on the way home and it was one of those giant light bulb moments.

I had been painting on and with antique maps, atlases and globes for a few years, exploring direction (and my inherent lack thereof) and so this series of song lyrics about direction on antique atlas pages has been a neat addition to my more painterly work.

This listing is for the sign press print only. The photo of a sign press print framed is just so you can see one framed. I also recently added a photo of the letters laid out in my press and of the press itself as people had questions about my process that I didn't seem to be answering in a way that was helpful.

These ORANGE and RED ones are unique in that for one press run I switched to oil based inks. I LOVE the richness of the colors but it took them a full 2 months to dry and there is a halo from the oil based ink around each letter (in some it is far more prominent than others--it is noticeable in the photos). This was not intentional but I like the way it makes the words pop from the page. These are the only ones like this, I will not be doing more in these colors as the drying really held me up---I only have so much space!
