This signed Paul Herzel "Pirate" Pompeian Bronze sculpture. Colors are bright, no obvious cracks, chips or major dings. Some small scratched around the square base.

This guy is a swashbuckling, saber-rattling pirate. Made of "Pompeian Bronze" (see more below) which is a type of electroformed bronze clad metal, these date prior to 1920.

The Pompeian Bronze Co. started out as Galvano Bronze , the first commercially produced art metal industry in the US. The name was changed to Pompeian after the founders sold their company to it's employees at the turn of the century. Pompeian continued in business through the end of 1920s creating beautifully plated and painted art nouveau style bookends using permanent mold, solid white metal castings. In 1922, they sold the molds and electroplating tanks to the newly formed Marion Bronze Co.

The German artist, Paul Herzel (876 - 1956) lved in New York and is known as a : sculptor-animal, painter, illustratorimal, painter, illustrator

The sculpture sits on a 4 1/2 inch square copper base and measures 10 1/2 inches tall. The copper base is in vintage condition with natural patina. There are no scratches on the Bronze statue itself.
