1912 Book God's Image in Ebony - TH Darlow
Published by the Young People's Missionary Movement, Fleet St., London

"This little volume has one simple object. It is an attempt to interest senior school-boys in the African negro, by setting before them his grave disabilities, his tragic burdens, his human needs. I am confident that school-boys have sense enough to recognize that the negro is utterly unlike his music-hall caricature. They have hearts to be touched by the claim which a backward race makes on Christian Englishmen, just because it is a race so degraded and down-trodden. They have chivalry and courage enough to respond to that mute appeal. They have faith enough to hear the Divine Voice which says : 'Inasmuch as ye do it unto one of the blackest of these My brothers, ye do it unto Me.'" ~ T.H. Darlow. Northwood, Middlesex, January 1912.

Written from the very obvious perspective of an early 20th century white missionary. 186 pages, 12 chapters, covering "The Hidden Continent" to "Negro Possibilities" & "Unto This Last" (noblesse oblige). 5 black & white photos. 3 fold-out maps: Africa 100 Years Ago (and this book was written 100 years ago); African Religions; Political Map of Present Day Africa.

The book is in only fair shape. This is due to the speckling throughout (see pics 3 & 4). It is quite heavy on some pages, yet absent on others. The pages are age-toned. Other than that, the book is very good. The cover is clean with no stains, wear or fraying (the top corners are a little bent). The spine is good. There are no writings, folds, or tears. The maps are in very good to excellent condition. So... a mixed bag.

A unique, historical look at one incredibly condescending & insulting world viewpoint of the early 1900s.
