This interesting hand knotted rug is a tribal rug from the Herati Region in Afghanistan . Herat encompasses many small villages over a wide area. You will find both Afghani and Persian rugs called Herati rugs. Movements of nomadic tribes across vast areas contributes to this, both for trade and seeking grazing lands.
This rug has a repeating arrow design that could be interpreted as a tree of life design. The tree of life symbolizes the direct path from earth to heaven, and is a common symbol found in rugs of this region. This rug has flat weave or kilim ends with a hand knotted center. The rug is hand made of 100% wool on a wool foundation. Natural color, home spun wool is used for the foundation and kilim ends. It has approximately 90 knots per square inch. The wool has a high lanolin content. This helps to keep the rug clean and the wool pliable. Measurements are 2'8"x4'8".
Being hand woven means you will find some variation in the size and design from one side of the rug to the other, see photos. Some color variation is expected within the colors of the rug. This is known as abrash. This is typically seen in nomadic tribal rugs. Being vintage you will find a few small pencil sized areas of missing or skipped tufts of wool, perhaps a knot head here or there. { This rug has 2 visiable knot heads in the tufted section. I have a closeup of the larger knot. This authenticates that this is a one of a kind hand made rug. In tribal rugs you may find a seed or grass hull woven into the rug. The colors of this rug are close to what is appearing in my first photo. My flash has brightened them on the high spots of the rug in my other photos. Colors will vary by computer monitor too. The rug has a very slight wave in the center. This will relax out once the rug is on a floor. This typically takes a week or two.
