Peyote stitch (also known as gourd stitch) has been used for a long time in Native American cultures to decorate objects. The process is like weaving and sewing, very meditative, and such stunning results!

I've always loved this color combo -- black, red, turquoise, and bone. I used waxed black thread to add an extra layer of contrast. The pattern was inspired by the woven ropes used by climbers, which I have always found to be really beautiful. In fact, the beadwork is even woven around a cotton rope core to give it body.

Beadwork like this takes patience and hours of time, but it's worth it to have such a gorgeous object in the end. :)

The necklace measures 18 inches in length, with brass findings. It closes with a lobster clasp.
