This light, lacey accessory can be knit either as a cowl or as a scarf. For either version, you'll need 350 yards of fingering weight yarn and US4 needles. You'll also need #6 seed beads: 96 (for the cowl) or 102 (for the scarf). Both versions are worked flat from one end to the other; the cowl is grafted.

Blocked Dimensions
Cowl: 7 inches/18 cm wide by 52 inches/132 cm long
Scarf: 7 inches/18 cm wide by 54 inches/137 cm long

Level of difficulty: Advanced beginner.

Techniques: stockinette stitch, garter stitch, yarnovers, ssk, k2tog, placing beads, and (for the cowl version) a provisional cast-on and grafting.

The stitch pattern is given in written form and in a chart.

The pattern includes instructions for placing beads and links to online tutorials for grafting. If you prefer, you can omit the beads; in that case, knit the stitch instead of placing a bead on it.
