This is a study in watercolour of a feather from a Northern Flicker. This is a type of "woodpecker" that often hunts for ants and other creepy-crawlies on the ground. Gorgeous bird!

I was recently walking with my best friend and my youngest son, chatting away, when I spotted the tell-tale signs of a hawk attack. Sometimes it looks like someone emptied a feather pillow onto the lawn - - sometimes it's just a scattering of feathers.

This time there were these lovely, spotted downy feathers everywhere. There was a bit of a breeze, so they were scattered across this lawn, under a large tree. Then, hiding in the grass were these great dark feathers with shafts of vibrant yellow.

These three feathers have the vibrant yellow shafts and are edged with the same yellow.

As an artist and a mom to two very small boys I try to paint at night when they go to bed. Please check in regularly to see what's new!

The image size is 5" x 7" and is painted on Saunders Waterford watercolour paper. 100% cotton
140lb cold pressed
