I started creating market totes years ago when my mom asked me to make her some. As I was coming up with a pattern for hers, I decided I would take the extra fabric I had bought and make some for myself. Over the years I have had so many compliments. The cashiers at the local grocery store, where I shop at, tell me that they know who has made some of the grocery bags that come through their checkouts.
These market totes are wonderful for going to farmers market. They are sturdy enough to hold lots of vegetables.
I have been trying to decide what to do with all these calendar towels that I inherited when we bought my aunt’s house 22 years ago. The first one I made was for a niece who spent a lot of time with this aunt. I used the calendar towel for the year she was born.
This market tote was made using the linen calendar from 1964. One side of the bag has the calendar and the other has the picture that was on the calendar. First off I used an apple red fabric for the main body. I added a border around the pieces of calendar with a red apple/berry fabric. The tote is fully lined with the red fabric. I would suggest hand washing and line dry.
The tote measures 16 inches high by 17 inches tall by 3 inch deep bottom. The two handles are the same fabric as the borders and interfaced with a heavy duty pelletex measuring 19 inches long.
The picture is of a farm. There are two houses, a barn, a covered bridge, lots of trees (some apple), a horse and carriage, a farmer in the field, and stacks of hay. There are reds, greens, browns, and blacks used in the calendar towel. The calendar part has a border around with brown branches, green leaves and red flowers.
Made in smoke free home.
