Antique Underwood Model 5 Typewriter

From 1874 the Underwood family made typewriter ribbon and carbon paper, and were among a number of firms who produced these goods for Remington. When Remington decided to start producing ribbons themselves, the Underwoods decided to get into the business of manufacturing typewriters. The Underwood No. 5 typewriter was a fixture in businesses in the early Twentieth century. Designed in 1901 by Frank Wagner, typists soon preferred this speedy and reliable machine. In 1900 the company published an ad boasting that the Navy purchased 250 of them.

According to the typewriter serial number database this unit was manufactured 1919-1920. SN# 1244625. ( http://tw-db.com/indexen.htm )

This Model 5 is in fair shape, some decorative paint is missing, the keys all lift, it does type and while not dirty it could use a proffesional cleaning of the mechanics. The carriage operates and the roller is in good shape. Some wear is noted on the space bar and the bell does not ding when you reach the end of the line ( a good cleaning required). This item is sold as is and because of the items weight (28 lbs) shipping can be quoted by destination. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions.
