Hand-carved and hand-painted ant-eater by Saúl Aragón

Ant-eater with designs and colors inspired by ancient Zapotec Indians near Monte Alban. This hand-carved and hand-painted piece is signed by the artist.

Dimensions: 6.5" height " , 10.0 “length, 4.5” width.

This carving is made from copal wood, harvested in a sustainable manner by an artisan cooperative (the Ecoalebrijes Association) in Arrazola, Oaxaca, Mexico. Several family members work together to carve and paint the piece. Each carving can take up to a week to create. Many pieces are made from a single piece of wood, specially selected to best represent the shape of individual animals. The sale of these carvings is one way that a village can stay intact and that an entire family can contribute to the well-being of the community.
